Welcome to the web resource explaining everything we know so far about narrative reporting in microbiology. The menu options above and links throughout provide access to what we have been doing to change clinical behaviours and improve patient outcomes in the management of infections.

Narrative reporting began in the Hywel Dda Microbiology Service in 2014 and became a Bevan Exemplar in the very first round in 2016. We added two adoption sites across Wales and are aiming to add other sample areas as part of the current programme.
Pump priming funds from the Bevan Commission and support allowed us to develop the idea of a national reporting service within Public Health Wales and with additional funding from the Welsh Government, we now have a team of dedicated Clinical Biomedical Scientists, together with other Laboratory Biomedical Scientists now engaged in narrative reporting.
Our project is part of the national Adopt and Spread (A&S) Programme led by the Bevan Commission. With the new dedicated team, we now have a whole series of additional resources that will allow any other sites pick up this new reporting method and integrate with their accreditation scheme.
Public Health Wales Microbiology Services are embedded in four of the Health Boards in Wales and provide a comprehensive range of diagnostic microbiology services from local, regional, national and reference laboratories. Our local laboratories in Hywel Dda, Betsi Cadwaladr and Swansea Bay are now using narrative reporting to improve the quality of our laboratory reports and influence the patient outcomes in our local populations.
The menus always at the top of our site give access to a whole range of information around narrative reporting in microbiology, allowing you to navigate and investigate more of the way that by communicating differently, we are influencing the behaviour of the complex adaptive system that is the NHS.
